Menu Math Activities
If you are teaching composing and decomposing numbers using money, why not make it super engaging? When it comes to fun money math activities, there is nothing better than Menu Math!
A few years ago, I purchased a menu math kit from a large educational vendor thinking I was going to get that engaging and fun math kit in my classroom. The problem was when it arrived the pictures were all clip art and none of the restaurants connected to my students… they had never been to them or heard of them. It was supposed to be super fun and instead it was a super flop.
After that, I started collecting menus from restaurants I ordered from often, like Chinese food places and Italian restaurants. I loved these places, but fast food was where it was at for my kiddos and McDonald’s doesn’t have a takeout menu.
I looked online to see if I could print a few menu pages from the web, but those didn’t have prices or give me a nice mix of food, sides, drinks, and desserts.
So, here we are… a product of necessity that has been a total hit in my classroom, in my partner classes, and is becoming a Noodle Nook bestseller. It is clear why- kids love ‘shopping’ at their favorite restaurant!
Money with Menu Math
What you will love about this activity is the modified menus. There are three levels for each of the seven restaurants included. The level 1 menu is all items priced with whole numbers. Level 2 is mixed with numbers ending in 0 or 5. Finally, level 3 is to the penny with mixed numbers. What that means is all students in your classroom can participate in the activity in a meaningful way that is tailored to their needs.
But that isn’t all… when you look through the task cards, you will see they are differentiated for student needs too! Students will be able to work on referencing the menu and counting out money, adding two items and counting out the money, using number sentences to add and give change with two items purchased, calculating change from a single item purchase, and finding the total and calculating the change for 2 items. You can see there are several levels, from basic to multi-stepped math. That means all your students will be challenged and keep learning.
Key Features
You will be able to print and prep 252 task cards to accompany the 21 printable menus from favorite fast food joints including KFC, Taco Bell, Burger King, and Chick-Fli-A… You can print them all at once to allow students to work on the menu of their choice or introduce them systematically in a Menu Math Center to keep it fresh and engaging all year long. With all the levels and options, you will be able to meet needs of students even as they change throughout the year!
Teacher Wins
If you have been looking for a fun and engaging math center, warm up, or early finisher activity to work on adding and subtracting money, then this is it. You do not have to struggle with modifying materials to meet student needs, the menus come in three levels and the activity cards are also leveled. Every student can participate and practice essential skills.
